The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Announce a New Divinity, Declaring it Their Largest RPG to Date

The speculation surrounding The Game Awards has been intense, notably after host Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious photo of a desert monolith. The question has now been solved. Larian Studios is developing a brand-new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer featuring intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal opening of infernal gates.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian clarified that a direct sequel to its venerated RPGs is not being worked on now.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This distinction hints that the team might be designing a more action-oriented experience as opposed to another tactical title. At this moment, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is widely praised and arguably it kicked off the contemporary revival of complex computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for detailed worlds, choice-driven narratives, and complex character building—qualities that subsequently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency bestowed upon the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is brimming with niche playthroughs that are viable with a distinct build with a personal story.

The series is also famously permissive, letting players to improvise both in story and combat. Nearly every quest can be solved in diverse methods, often in unexpected fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by using the world itself in a clever way.

A New Chapter Begins

It is these creative systems that lead fans and critics to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, players can get ready for more where that came from in this groundbreaking franchise.
