Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for hours when dozens of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and close to the Belarusian boundary.

At least 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminals use a method that is especially affected by weather elements rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that such operations become unprofitable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
