Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year Amid Financial Instability

The US monetary authority cut borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second rate cut in the current year during economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release notes. “Inflation has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed typically analyzes BLS data to assess labor market conditions, such as the number of new jobs created to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in early September, prior to the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The figure of positions added to the market in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Decline

Though the bureau was set to release September’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its release when the closure began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the business segment cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, which he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are going up, although gradually. Costs rose three percent over the last year, the highest since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
